New Year, New Quarter

| 2 Comments | No TrackBacks

With the new year comes a new quarter. A quarter, for those of you "semester school" kids who don't know, is one academic term at Northwestern or any other "quarter school". We have four of them a year including summer, hence "quarter." Semester schools however, have three a year including summer and hence "semest..." oh wait ... that's right, THAT DOESN'T WORK. So really you go to a "trimester school" not a semester school.

This quarter I'll be taking four courses, as usual. I'm rather excited about what I'm taking, and I'll show you why:
(1) ASIC and FPGA Design
(2) Computer Architecture
(3) Mechatronics
(4) Transportation Economics

I'm not sure yet what ASIC stands for. But FPGA's are Field Programmable Gate Arrays. They're useful for creating devices that can do one thing at first, and then later you reprogram it to do another (kinda). I won't say anything more on the subject because nobody cares, but I'm looking forward to it because it is a computer engineering course and I usually do the best in this subject with the least amount of effort. This is partly why I'm considering switching back from Electrical to Computer Engineering. Same can be said for the Computer Architecture course.

Mechatronics should be awesome because it is a Mechanical Engineering course that teaches the extremely basic principles of my major for the first few weeks. The quizzes and midterms for an ECE major like myself should be very easy. The really cool thing about this class though is the latter vast majority is spent designing a mechatronic device. Some people make robots, others make robotic arms that do things, pretty much anything that involves moving parts is legit.

Finally, we get to transportation economics. I really know nothing about this subject or this class other than the fact that the professor got really good CTEC's (a CTEC is like a student review at NU) and it is supposed to be great.

Anyway, I head back to school tomorrow, December 31st. The last time I saw my girlfriend in person was on August 31st, so if that isn't exactly 4 months I don't know what is (I mean how do you truly define something that can last between 28 and 31 days). I'm extremely excited, but that's really all I'll say on the subject because I don't normally talk about anything too personal on here.

I hope people start reading this again. I'd like to start posting again but I think what I need to get that done is comment/trackback encouragement. So if you haven't already, sign up for a TypeKey account so you can comment on my site without me having to approve the comments first.

Alright.
